The Barwon River enters the sea in lee of Barwon Heads. The river flows along the eastern side of the heads and the reefs, that run for another 1 km to the east. The tip of the head is called Point Flinders, which is a 20 m high sand dune surrounded by rock platforms and reefs. In behind the point, a narrow sand beach runs up along the river to the bridge. The beach is initially backed by a seawall and foreshore reserve, and then the Barwon Heads caravan and camping area. Closer to the bridge there are two car parks and a jetty.
The beach is narrow, steep and usually calm. However, shifting tidal shoals, deeper channels and strong currents parallel the beach.
