North Spit lies at the northern end of the large Wide Bay Harbour tidal shoals, the point or 'spit' forming where the shoals reach the coast. The shoals both reduce wave height in their lee and change wave direction. The result is a low energy, east facing beach (Fig. 102). This beach (FR9) extends for 4.5 km between North Spit and Hook Point, where the channel proper begins. Waves average 0.5 to 1 m, decreasing toward Hook Point. At the same time, the rips decrease and the bar becomes more continuous and narrow to the south (Fig. 3.1b). Because of the generally steeper gradient and at times narrowness of the beach, a gravel road has been constructed paralleling the back of the beach, to provide safe access for vehicles from the Hook Point ferry to the low gradient beach north of Fourth Creek.
Beach Length: 4.5km
General Hazard Rating: 5/10
