The small community of Coledale occupies the next steep valley 1 km south of Wombarra. The main road descends from the high cliffs to run along the rear of Coledale Beach (NSW 357). The 400 m long beach faces east-southeast and is bordered by cliffs to the north and extensive rock platforms at either end, with the sandy surf zone 270 m in length. It is exposed to waves averaging 1.5 m, which maintain permanent rips against the rocks at either end and usually a shifting central beach rip (Fig. 4.281). Stockyard Creek flows across the northern beach and following heavy rain and big seas the sand is stripped off revealing a cobble and boulder beach below. The beach is backed by a small beachfront caravan park and the Coledale SLSC (founded 1916) at the southern end, with slopes then rising to the main road and township. In addition, 20 tall Norfolk Island pine trees line the southern half of the beach (Fig. 4.282) and the local primary school overlooks the beach from the southern headland. The Northcote rock pool is located on the southern rock platforms 300 m south of the beach.
