The kids corner is a little spot especially for you. You can learn a bit about the beach and rip currents and spread the word among your friends.
When you go to the beach this summer, make sure you swim between the red and yellow flags!
What should you do when you go to the beach?

What signs might indicate an unsafe area to swim at the beach?
If you see these signs around the beach, make sure you think twice before going in the water. Play it safe, and always swim between the red and yellow flags.

What is a rip current?
A rip current is a flow of water moving away from the beach. You should avoid them by swimming between the red and yellow flags.

If you wanted to, how could you spot a rip current?
A few natural signs at the beach might help you to spot a rip
- darker water, indicating deeper water
- murky brown water caused by sand stirred up by faster moving water
- a choppy or rippled look, when the water around is generally calm
- foam or debris floating out to sea

If you accidently got into a rip current, what should you do?
If you did get an rip current make sure you:
1. Stay calm
2. Raise your arm and call for help
3. Wait for a lifesaver or lifeguard to come and rescue you
4. Don’t panic
The best way to avoid a rip current is by swimming between the red and yellow flags.
